DIY: No-Sew Catnip Toys

Author Terry Pratchett said it best: “In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this.” What better way to feed into your cat’s ego than to present them with toys made by you with love and adoration? As the second installment in our summer DIY series, these easy, no-sew cat toys will make your cat feel like they’re on top of the world. Also, your cat will probably look super cute while playing with them––is that selfish?

For your catnip toys, you’ll need:

  • Fabric of your choice
  • Cotton balls
  • Loose catnip
  • Yarn (optional)
  • Scissors

Start by cutting your fabric into squares roughly 5 x 5 in each. Use old t-shirts, your grandma’s leftover sewing scraps, or that fabric you bought to make something super cute and totally forgot about. Just make sure it’s soft and colorful.

Place a few cotton balls in the middle of your fabric squares, then sprinkle some loose catnip on top. Customize your cat toys by adding more cotton balls for a little extra squishy-ness or sprinkling a bit more catnip for added enrichment.

Pull the corners of your squares together, packing in the cotton balls and catnip. Tie off the toy using leftover strips of fabric or yarn, leaving a good-sized pouf on top.

Toss the toys to your cat and watch them go wild! If your cat is particularly dog-like, this would be the perfect time to introduce the game of fetch. They’ll have a blast!

Happy crafting!

Strutt To Save Lives

Strutt With Us!

Strutt With Us!

It’s time to register for the 20th Annual Strutt With Your Mutt for Wayside Waifs.  In honor of the events 20th Anniversary, we are making some big changes to take Strutt to the next level.

One of the most important changes is the addition of Dog Packs.  Dog Packs are teams of people that register and Strutt together.  It’s an awesome way to get your family, friends, neighbors, clients or co-workers involved in this great event.  You can show your team spirit by coming up with a clever team name, creating team shirts, wearing wacky hats or dressing your dogs in team bandanas.

This year our goal is to raise a record $75,000 at Strutt With Your Mutt, but we can’t do it alone.  There is tremendous power in numbers, and by forming or joining a Dog Pack you can help Wayside Waifs continue our lifesaving mission.  If every member of your Dog Pack raised just $100, think of the difference we could make!  We know times are tough, but every $5 or $10 donation quickly adds up!

Every Dog Pack has an opportunity to win some great prizes for their fundraising efforts.  The winning team will also win a picnic in the Wayside Bark Park!  How cool is that?!?

There will be something for everyone at Strutt With Your Mutt, including a 5K Fun Run, Kids Run, Cat Walk and 3K Strutt (a leisurely dog walk through Brookside).  There will also be a delicious pancake breakfast with Chris Cakes, and you can shop ‘til you drop in Vendor Village!

Remember, every dollar raised at Strutt directly helps homeless animals.  Wayside Waifs receives no government funding and relies on people just like you to continue to help the animals.  Wayside is proud to be Kansas City’s largest no-kill animal shelter.  We thank you for helping the animals and we can’t wait to see you and your Dog Pack at Strutt With Your Mutt on September 25th in Brookside.

The 20th Annual Strutt With Your Mutt is presented by Bayer Animal Health.  For more information and to create your dog pack, please visit www.waysidewaifs.org/strutt

Start working your costume now for the Delaware Dog Street Parade!

Can you believe it’s already June?  Wayside Waifs is gearing up for another great month of events and fundraisers!  We hope you can join us at one, two or all of our June events!  Keep your eyes peeled for the Wayside mobile adoption unit!  We’re taking our waifs on the road this month for mobile adoption events all around the metro!

Wayside will get jazzy on Saturday, June 12th.  From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Phoenix Jazz Club in downtown Kansas City is hosting a charity brunch benefiting Wayside. For just $20, you will enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet, a complimentary breakfast cocktail and live jazz music by Lonnie McFadden and his special guest!  Our mobile adoption unit will be there, so guests can mingle with our waifs!  We hope to see you there!

The very next weekend, Saturday June 19th, Wayside is heading to the River Market for the 3rd Annual Delaware Street Dog Parade, the shortest parade in history!  This is an event you and your dog don’t want to miss!  Most of the canine participants dress to impress and compete for great prizes and “barking” rights!  Registration is just $10 and all proceeds benefit Wayside Waifs.  Of course our mobile adoption until will be there… and our waifs will be prominently featured at this great event!

On the 26th… we’re heading west… to Village West, to be exact.  Nebraska Furniture Mart has invited our waifs to a special adoption event!  We hope they’ll all find homes that day!

Save the date for these wonderful Fall events:

September 25:  20th Annual Strutt With Your Mutt
October 3rd:  Bark at the K
October 9th:  Kicks for K-9’s
