Summer Brings Feline Fridays to Wayside Waifs

Summer is here and that means it’s “kitten season” at Wayside Waifs.  Each June and July, Wayside Waifs is inundated with kittens… hundreds of them.  Right now, there are more than 100 cats at Wayside Waifs awaiting adoption, and more than 150 in foster care and waiting to come into the shelter.

To help all of these kitties find forever loving homes, Wayside Waifs is bringing back Feline Fridays.  Every Friday in June and July, Wayside Waifs is offering cat adoption specials.  You can adopt a kitten for $60!  The adoption fee for cats over five months old is just $15.  And the really cool part- if you adopt a second kitty, Wayside will waive the adoption fee!  Cats thrive in pairs, so this is a great deal for you and them!

If you are thinking about adopting a kitty, we encourage you to bring your entire family to Wayside Waifs to meet all potential feline family members.  We know those cute adorable little kittens are tough to resist, but often adult cats are best for families with small children.  Experienced Wayside adoption counselors and our wonderful volunteers will be on hand to guide you through the entire adoption process, and help you find the purr-fect kitty for your family.

Remember, being in the shelter can be pretty stressful on these sweet kitties.  Their true personalities will really start to emerge after you take the home.  It may take a few weeks for them to really get adjusted to their lives in their forever homes, so they will need your love and patience!

More than 4 million homeless cats end up in shelters every year in the United States.  By adopting a feline friend from Wayside Waifs, you will be saving a life.  How cool is that?

Need more reasons to adopt a kitty?  Consider these benefits of opening your home to a kitty:

-Cats are great for people who live in apartments and smaller homes… they don’t need a lot of space.

-They are very clean creatures and even bathe themselves!

-They also don’t need to be housebroken, using the litter box is second nature to them!

-They are low-maintenance and independent too!  They don’t require daily walks, just about 15 minutes of daily playtime with you!

-Cats will also help keep you healthy!  They can actually reduce your blood pressure and prevent hearth disease!

Have you adopted a kitty from Wayside Waifs?  Share you story and inspire others to adopt!

A Dog’s Purpose

We are very pleased to tell you about a wonderful opportunity that’s come our way-a partnership with Rainy Day Books to raise important funds for Wayside Waifs.

A great new novel about dogs, A Dog’s Purpose, is coming out July 6, 2010.  Between now and then, Rainy Day Books is accepting orders for the book, “pre-sales” as they are called.   For every pre-sale of A Dog’s Purpose, Rainy Day Books will donate 10% of the cover price to Wayside Waifs.  That’s around $2.20 for every pre-sale.  It could add up quickly, providing us badly needed funds!   Best yet, it is money we make without having to spend money-there’s no overhead cost to us.

This novel is being lauded by some of the nation’s top animal advocates.  More about that below, but first, here are the details of the program.  To support this effort, all you need to do is buy one or more copies of A Dog’s Purpose by going to the book store’s website or by phoning in your order at (913) 384-3126, or by visiting the store to place your order at 2706 W. 53rd Street,, Fairway, KS 66205

Be sure to tell them you want the money to go to Wayside Waifs, as they are donating to two charities in this program.  A Dog’s Purpose is written by the NY Times Bestselling Author and nationally syndicated newspaper columnist W. Bruce Cameron.  Read more about the author at www.adogspurpose.com .

Brownie & Sue Find Their Forever Family

An Adoptathon Tail...

An Adoptathon Tail...

How long does it take to fall in love?  On a day between one and one hundred sixteen, Wayside fell hard for two wonderful dogs. During the four months these two were with us, Wayside volunteers and staff would walk, snuggle, brush, feed, talk to and on different days for each of us, fall in love with, Brownie and Sue.   They came to Wayside Waifs just before Christmas, two senior sisters, each about 10 years old.  They are lovely, smaller, mix-breed dogs with gentle, soft personalities.  Brownie and Sue spent many afternoons in the Wayside Adoptions Center patiently waiting for their own family to come along while 1052 other dogs found their forever homes.  They had a tail wag for everyone but despite the love their friends at Wayside gave them, more than anything, they wanted a home of their own.

The magic that happens for all adoptable animals who come to Wayside Waifs started when Brownie and Sue made their appearance on channel 5 one Saturday morning.  Their new mom (she didn’t know she was to be their mom at the time) saw them and her heart opened.  It had been awhile since they’d had a dog, the loss of their last dog was still painful, were these two dogs meant to be part of the family?

Her second encounter with Brownie and Sue happened on the family’s drive to the Royals game Saturday afternoon.  106.5 The Wolf was doing a live remote from Wayside Waifs for the semi-annual Adoptathon.   Wes (one of the Wolf’s Jocks) spoke about the generous volunteer who was sponsoring the adoption of Brownie and Sue and for Susie (their new mom) it was truly a sign.  She and her husband spent most of the game talking about adopting these two dogs; what would it mean to bring home two senior dogs, how long would it take for Brownie and Sue to become members of their new family?

The answer is instantly!  It was love at first sight and life for both the two and four legged members of this family has been great.  Susie says that people do question their reasoning behind adopting two senior dogs but she tells them that it’s not Brownie and Sue who are the lucky ones.  For Susie and her husband, the unconditional love given by these two sweet souls is proof enough that nobody is ever too old for new love.

Two Dogs, Two People, 10 Legs

Lance has always loved Brittanys.  His wife Paula is more drawn to Labs.  Lance and Paula enjoyed more than fourteen years with their beloved lab, Midnight*  and their Brittany, Stella*, but they had known for months that it wouldn’t be much longer for the two dogs who loved each other, and their humans, so very much.  That dreaded time came and they lost both of their babies.

Enter Wayside Waifs.  Lance was perusing www.waysidewaifs.org and saw the CUTEST Brittany named Alex.  Alex had all the beautiful markings and characteristics of a Brittany that Lance loved, and so he coaxed Paula to come to Wayside today during our 3rdAnnual Adoptathon- an event extravaganza sponsored by 106.5 The Wolf wherein all animals at Wayside Waifs go home for half the adoption price.

It was love at first sight for Lance and Alex.  One catch, though, when Alex was first brought to Wayside as a stray found in Raymore, she had a severe injury on her foot.  Due to neglect, the injury did not heal well and could cause further harm if the limb was not removed.  So the Wayside vets went to work, and now Alex is a cute, cuddly, healthy 3-legged Brittany who found a new home today.

But the story doesn’t end here.  While Lance was bonding with Brittany Alex, a black Lab named Lou caught the eye of his wife Paula.  Lou is a one year old who came to Wayside after a terrible run in with a car.  The good vets here at Wayside Waifs acted swiftly to save Lou’s life.  But they could not save Lou’s leg.

You’ve probably guessed the end of this story. Lance and Paula now have two new forever friends- Lance adopted 3-legged Alex, and Paula adopted 3-legged Lou.  Sometimes, love is a four three legged word.

Wayside Waifs at the Home Show

On Thursday, Ashlee Parker, Communications Manager at Wayside Waifs, and I spent the afternoon transforming our booth at the Home Show into a fun play land for our Waifs who would be attending the Home Show.  Thanks to Guier Fence we have a wonderful play yard for the dogs to run free and play with Wayside Volunteers and attendees of the Home Show.  We added a futon with colorful bedding, some bright colored bean bag chairs, lots of toys and comfy beds.  Wayside has never done a play yard like this at the Home Show, but we were very excited about it.

On Friday morning, there were a lot of people already at the show and everyone wanted to know what time the dogs would arrive in the play yard.  Thanks to Barbara, Adoptions Manager at Wayside Waifs, Steve and Kristen  we were able to get the dogs to the Home Show earlier than planned!  From the time the dogs arrived, our booth area was packed!  The dogs had a blast just playing with each other and staff members.  It was quite comical and as a result several of the dogs, including two seventeen-week old, miniature toy poodles, found forever loving homes.

Although large mobile events like this can be very taxing on our resources, we really enjoy these kinds of events.  So many people came up to show us photos of the pets they had adopted from Wayside Waifs.  It’s so wonderful to hear people talk about their pets and how much adopting an animal changed their life in a positive way.

Today, there has been a steady flow of people coming to the Wayside play yard, interacting with the dogs and sharing their stories.  Wayside also has their own stage this year and there are several shows taking place throughout the day.  You can learn about Wayside Waifs Humane Education programs in local schools and Wayside Dog Trainers will also be presenting on the Wayside stage throughout the day.

I invite you to come by and experience our awesome play yard and love on some of our wonderful Waifs who are looking for a forever loving home.  The adoption process only takes about 30 minutes and you can take your dog home from the show!

The Wayside staff and volunteers will be at the Home Show on Saturday from 10-8 and Sunday from 10-6.  We look forward to seeing you at the Home Show at Bartle Hall!
