Strutt To Save Lives

Strutt With Us!

Strutt With Us!

It’s time to register for the 20th Annual Strutt With Your Mutt for Wayside Waifs.  In honor of the events 20th Anniversary, we are making some big changes to take Strutt to the next level.

One of the most important changes is the addition of Dog Packs.  Dog Packs are teams of people that register and Strutt together.  It’s an awesome way to get your family, friends, neighbors, clients or co-workers involved in this great event.  You can show your team spirit by coming up with a clever team name, creating team shirts, wearing wacky hats or dressing your dogs in team bandanas.

This year our goal is to raise a record $75,000 at Strutt With Your Mutt, but we can’t do it alone.  There is tremendous power in numbers, and by forming or joining a Dog Pack you can help Wayside Waifs continue our lifesaving mission.  If every member of your Dog Pack raised just $100, think of the difference we could make!  We know times are tough, but every $5 or $10 donation quickly adds up!

Every Dog Pack has an opportunity to win some great prizes for their fundraising efforts.  The winning team will also win a picnic in the Wayside Bark Park!  How cool is that?!?

There will be something for everyone at Strutt With Your Mutt, including a 5K Fun Run, Kids Run, Cat Walk and 3K Strutt (a leisurely dog walk through Brookside).  There will also be a delicious pancake breakfast with Chris Cakes, and you can shop ‘til you drop in Vendor Village!

Remember, every dollar raised at Strutt directly helps homeless animals.  Wayside Waifs receives no government funding and relies on people just like you to continue to help the animals.  Wayside is proud to be Kansas City’s largest no-kill animal shelter.  We thank you for helping the animals and we can’t wait to see you and your Dog Pack at Strutt With Your Mutt on September 25th in Brookside.

The 20th Annual Strutt With Your Mutt is presented by Bayer Animal Health.  For more information and to create your dog pack, please visit www.waysidewaifs.org/strutt

I Can’t Save Them All But I Can Try

One of our foster kittens

One of our foster kittens

We all love our pets and while watching them grow to become an individual, it is nice to reminisce about their younger days.  The potty training, the half-eaten shoe, or the nibbles on my toes at night somehow become pleasant memories.  Now they are all grown and my house is full, but I still have more love to give.  Therefore, I now foster to give others the proper stepping stones to fill someone else’s house and heart.  I am still able to get the joy of when my animals were young, but through my fostering experience.

Animals can go into a foster home for a variety of reasons.  Sometimes they just need a little more socialization or attention, or maybe they need some extra care for medical reasons.  There are times when an animal is sick and does not recover.  Along the way of the seventy-something animals I have had the joy of fostering, some were lost.  My heart was broken, and I said to myself that I would never foster again.  But walking through the shelter day after day, I still find the need to love more.  Picking myself up after the sadness and despair of losing something I was nurturing somehow becomes easier.  It is clearer that there is a greater good to what I am doing then just how I am feeling at the moment of my loss.  Sometimes the fact that you cannot save them all is played out harshly.  I recall the feeling in my younger days when I felt invincible, nothing bad would ever happen to me.  Now, the years have gone by and realizing that I am just human as been proven.  Life happens and it is up to me to get up and dust myself off.  Realizing through my loss that I have more love to give becomes more and more relevant.

The reward I get from seeing my foster animals go to forever loving homes outweighs the sadness once felt for the ones I couldn’t save, though they are never forgotten.  We all have experienced life’s ups and downs, but the warm and fuzzy feelings drive us to move on.  Hearing the purring of kittens or seeing the innocent faces of puppies is the best medicine for a broken heart.  Saving them all is not always an option but the animals I can save; will get me through a lifetime.

Is your company looking for a meaningful way to give back to the community? Would you like bring your employees together in support of a great cause? At Wayside, your team can make a world of difference – and have a lot of fun along the way!

Here are five great ways your business can get involved. We’d love to add your business to our family of corporate supporters.

1. Become a 2009 Fur Ball sponsor
Join us for our 2009 Fur Ball on Saturday, May 9, at 6 p.m. at the Overland Park Convention Center. This year’s theme is Cattyshack, with table sponsorships ranging from Tiger Woods ($25,000) and Slice of Heaven ($10,000) to Wedgy Woof ($5,000), the Chevy Chaser ($2,500), and Putt for Pets ($1,750).

2. Provide corporate volunteers
Work side by side to make a difference! A group from your company can come to Wayside to volunteer, or you provide support at one of our special events. We can also arrange a Lunch and Learn, where a Wayside team member will visit your company to talk to your employees about Wayside Waifs and volunteer opportunities.

10 wonderful ways to volunteer at Wayside Waifs

You might be surprised how many volunteer opportunities we have at Wayside Waifs. Volunteers support every aspect of what we do, from intake and day-to-day animal care, to foster care and adoption, to education and outreach.

To learn more, visit the volunteer section of our website, where you will find more information on training and experience required for all of our volunteer positions, and instructions on how to fill out an volunteer application.

Here are 10 volunteer positions where we could use more helping hands and compassionate hearts. Is one of them right for you?

Adoption Counter Assistant
– Help our waifs find new homes! Greet customers, assist potential adopters in the application process, explain adoption procedures, describe the responsibilities of pet ownership, and assist with answering messages, filing and copying.

Bathing & Grooming
– Roll up your sleeves and help us bathe, brush, and trim our furry friends. (We’ll teach you how – you don’t have to be a pro!)

Building & Grounds Maintenance – Help us keep our grounds and facilities in excellent condition for our animal and human guests. Assist with mowing, landscaping projects, maintenance of the Pet Memorial Park, facility care and upkeep.

Canine Companion/Advocate – Puppy love needed! If you are a dog lover, you can help socialize dogs and puppies and introduce them to potential adopters. Or take it up a notch and become a WAGS Trainer, training shelter dogs with simple non-verbal commands (excellent, informative training provided!)

Data for Dogs
– With thousands of dogs coming through the shelter each year, we have a lot of information to manage. Are you an organizational whiz with an eye for detail? We could use your help updating files and providing administrative assistance.

Digital Photography – Are you a shutterbug? We need volunteers with photographic know-how to take on-site photos of animals and Wayside Waifs events (and write captions for the photos, too). You could even see your images featured on this blog!

Follow-up Volunteer – Are you an animal lover and a people person? This important position contacts recent adopters regarding their pets and maintain follow-up contact info. We also need Greeters to welcome shelter guests and explain Wayside procedures, and Receptionists to answer phones, direct visitors, and answer questions about the shelter.

Humane Educator
– Do you have a well-trained, well-socialized companion animal? Do have experience teaching or giving presentations? Our Humane Educators work with their companion animal to make educational group presentations.

Kitty Cuddler/Advocate – Are you a cat lover? We need your help socializing cats and kittens and showing cats to potential adopters.

Mobile Adoptions
– Hit the road and help our waifs find homes! Mobile Adoption volunteers show adoptable Wayside pets on-site at community events.
