Waif Wednesday

Happy Waif Wednesday! Meet our fabulous Waifs of the Week: Archer, Gumbo, and Scooby. These three lovebugs can’t wait to find their forever families!

Hey! I’m Archer! I’m a shy sweetie pie with big eyes and an even bigger heart. I’m 2 years old, and I came to Wayside as a transfer from a partner shelter when they ran out of space, and now, I just can’t wait to find my forever family!

I’m kind of fearful and timid when I first meet someone, but don’t you worry! I’ll warm up to you with some time to sniff out the situation and make sure everything is safe and ready to go. I just need a patient person who will love me as I learn! I love people, but sometimes I get scared and don’t like being touched, restrained, or grabbed when I’m not expecting it. I’m making lots of progress thanks to my friends here at the shelter, but for now, I would do best in a home without kids under 5 years. But like I said, I do love people! I love playing and getting pets, just on my own terms. I’m pretty good at walking on a leash, but I don’t know any commands yet. I’m very food motivated, though, so I know that with your help, I’ll be super duper smart and on top of my game in no time!

If I sound like the perfect pup for you, come to Wayside and ask to meet me!

Love, Archer

Pleased to meet you! My name is Gumbo. It suits me because I’m warm and will add spice to your life! I’m a big, rugged, handsome buff-colored tabby with the most adorable baby face. I like toys, but really, I just want to be loved on. I’ve been told that I’m easy to love because I’m so cute and sweet!

My favorite thing to do here at Wayside is lounge around in my bed. I like to curl up in it sometimes. Other times I like to stretch out and cock my head a little, especially while someone is talking to me. It shows that I’m listening to everything you have to say to me. I’m a great listener, and your secrets are safe with me!

If you are looking for a big, adorable teddy bear of a cat, please come to Wayside and ask for me!

Love, Gumbo

Hi there, friends! My name is Scooby, and like Scooby-Doo, I would love to be part of your gang and go on adventures together. I’m a smiley guy, with brown and white fur and freckles on my nose. I came to Wayside from another shelter, and moving has been pretty scary for me, but everyone here is so nice. They want me to be as happy and healthy as possible so I can go home with my fur-ever family!

I love meeting new people and dogs! My new friends here say that I’m a friendly sweetie pie. The only command I know right now is “sit,” but I’m very treat (Scooby Snack) motivated, and I’m excited to learn some new tricks with my new family. I walk really well on a leash, too. I can’t wait to get started on being best friends fur-ever!

If I sound like the perfect pup for you, come to Wayside and ask to meet me!

Love, Scooby

Waif Wednesday

Happy Waif Wednesday! Meet our adorable Waifs of the Week: Bruce, Bell, and Pancha. One of our original Waifs of the Week, Syrus, was adopted, so Pancha is stepping up to the plate. These three cuties can’t wait to go home!

Hey there! My name is Bruce, and I am one handsome dog, don’t you think? I am mostly black, but have brown and white in my coat too. I am a big boy, weighing about 70 pounds. I’m over two years old, so I’m probably as big as I’m going to get.

I have lots of energy and love to play, especially with balls and other toys that you can throw! I’m such a good chaser. If the folks here at Wayside would ever let me loose, I’d sure chase all the squirrels they have around here! I walk pretty well on a leash, but just make sure to have a firm grip on it if one of those silly squirrels crosses our path. I’m looking for a pretty active family who’d like to have a four-legged companion on all of their adventures.

Does that sound like you? If so, please come to Wayside and ask to meet me!

Love and kisses, Bruce

Thanks for reading about me! My name is Bell, and I’m a beautiful, regal-looking, soft gray tabby girl.

I’m a high-energy gal who loves to play. My favorite toy is a Cat Charmer, which is a long piece of fabric on a stick. When you wave it around for me, I’ll have lots of fun chasing it around! When we are done, I will carry it around the house in my mouth. That way I won’t forget where I put it! I sure hope my new family will play with me every day. It will help me burn off energy, and it’s a great way for us to bond with each other while having fun.

I also love it when people talk to me. I’m a great listener, and I will probably weigh in with my own meowed opinions from time to time as well. I enjoy being pet on my head and neck. I can get a little overstimulated, so it would be best if my adopter is a cat-savvy person who understands cat personalities and behaviors. Just so you know, I’d prefer to go to a home with no dogs or other cats. I promise to be the only four-legged friend you will need!

Anything else you’d like to know about me? Just come to Wayside and ask me!

Love, Bell

Hello, I’m Pancha! I’m so happy you’re taking the time to learn about me! I was transferred to Wayside after my last place ran out of room.  I am a larger dude at 90 pounds so I can understand that.  I am so glad I am here because I just know my family will come to adopt me soon!

I am a super fluffy Great Pyrenees-type fella, and I love to explore the world around me. I’m a great leash walker, and I enjoy walking around the nice trails they have here. I’m a super smart pup––I know the command “sit” already, and I’m so ready to learn more. I’m only 2 years old, so I can’t wait to enjoy life with you!

I do request that you bring the whole family, including dogs, to meet me before you bring me home so I can make sure that we’ll all be buddies. Believe it or not, I am even more stunning in person, so come to Wayside and ask to meet me soon!

Love, Pancha

Fleas, Ticks, and Intestinal Parasites….Oh my!

Waif alum Patrick is all smiles because he’s protected against harmful insects!

As a pet owner, you’re probably aware of the harmful effects of creepy crawly critters can have on your animals. We’ve answered some common questions about keeping your furry friends happy and healthy!

Q: What are heartworms? How do I prevent them?

A:  Heartworm disease is caused by long worms (heartworms) that live in an animal’s body. The can live in the heart, lungs, and surrounding vessels. Heartworms are spread via mosquito bites. Warmer climates experience an increase in mosquitoes and consequently, heartworms. Southern states unfortunately see more cases than the rest of the country.

When a mosquito bites an infected dog, they then carry microfilariae (heartworm offspring). When that mosquito bites another dog, they’ve then transmitted through the wound. Without a heartworm preventative, the heartworms have the chance to develop and cause devastating health effects.

Prevention is your best friend and is relatively affordable compared to the cost of treating a dog who becomes heartworm positive. Prevention comes in many forms. The FDA has approved a number of products to keep your furry friend safe. For shelter animals, Wayside Waifs uses Advantage Multi, a topical preventative. Advantage Multi is applied to an animal on a monthly basis and protects against fleas, heartworms, and intestinal parasites. It is recommended to have your dog tested for heartworms annually. Most times, a vet clinic can do this test during your visit.

The average cost of a monthly dose is only around $15, depending on the weight of the animal. A complete heartworm treatment can cost anywhere between $400-$1000. While it’s a financial strain for you, the physical impact on your furry friend is much harder. A dog battling heartworm disease can experience coughing, fatigue, difficulty breathing and issues with major organs, like the heart and lungs.

Q: What about my cat? Can he get heartworms?

A: Yes, your cat can also get heartworms from an infected mosquito. They are less susceptible than a dog because a heartworm doesn’t thrive in their body. Heartworms do not live as long and do not grow like they do in dogs. Though cats are much smaller than dogs, a few worms inside a cat would be considered a heavy infection.

While we know cats are less susceptible to heartworms, we know this isn’t the case with fleas or intestinal parasites. A preventative like Advantage Multi will keep them safe from all of these, for a relatively low cost.

Q: Do I need to use flea and tick prevention year-round?

A: YES! Fleas can still stick around when temperatures drop. They can keep warm on your furry friend. Yuck! Flea eggs can stay on your carpeting and furniture and develop in the temperate environment.

Ticks don’t necessarily die when we see winter’s first frost. Wildlife around us can carry these pesky bugs. Ticks aren’t picky about their host. They’re happy to latch onto you as well.

A Seresto collar provides up to 8 months of protection from ticks. They’re available for both dogs and cats!

A Seresto collar is an effective way to keep ticks at bay!

Q: What’s the deal with intestinal parasites?

A: Intestinal parasites live inside your pet’s gastrointestinal tract and can include a wide variety of worms. Bleh! These are usually transmitted via an inadvertent ingestion of eggs or spores in contaminated water, soil, or feces. Tapeworms are common and usually occur when an animal eats a contaminated flea. Any parasite can have harmful effects on your pet. Weight loss, diarrhea and malnutrition are just a few. Prevention is easy! Ask your vet about different prevention products! *Please note: Preventative meant for dogs can be fatal to a cat. Please ensure you’re using the correct product for your critter!

Utilizing a prevention product can save you money and heartache down the line. Your furry friend will thank you!

You can find these products and more at Whiskers and Wags, located inside Wayside Waifs!

As always, if you have any concerns about your pet’s health, contact your personal veterinarian!

Waif Wednesday

Happy Waif Wednesday! Meet our absolutely amazing Waifs of the Week: Fluffy, Kenny, and Daisy Mae. One of our original Waifs of the Week, Maurie, found his forever family, so Daisy Mae is stepping up to the plate. These three cuties are so excited to find their families!

Hello there! My name is Fluffy. I am an adorable 8-year-old blue tuxedo cat with gorgeous golden eyes. I have a great personality, and I promise to be your very best friend! I came to Wayside when another shelter ran out of space. The staff here took amazing care of me, and the doctor checked me out. They found that I am FIV positive, which is really no big deal––it just means that my immune system is somewhat compromised. So, it’s important that I’m an indoor-only kitty and that I have regular vet checkups.

Right now, I’m living in a foster home. Man, life in my foster home is grand! My foster mom has a couple kiddos and big dogs that I love to hang out with. Foster mom says she loves how sweet and snuggly I am! I absolutely adore being pet and staying close, I really hope you’re looking for a cuddly cat like me. Now that I feel like I have a village of support, I feel so ready to find my forever family and home!

Contact Wayside Adoptions at (816)986-4426 and ask to meet me.

Love, Fluffy

Hi there, I’m Kenny! You’ve probably heard of me––I’m kind of famous around these parts. I’m a handsome, 2-year-old bundle of energy with a gorgeous coat and a lovable personality. I came to Wayside as a transfer from the SPCA in Louisiana when they were running short on space. I’m game for anything, so I was happy to relocate to the Midwest. I’m quite popular here and I’ve managed to get involved in everything Wayside has to offer. What I long for though is a home and family of my very own!

I’ve joined the Wayside Runner’s Program, where I’m a green list runner, meaning I’m focused, I keep a nice pace, and I make an overall great running partner. My friends here gave me a harness for walks, and now I’m pretty much a pro––I never pull! I will need daily exercise in my life to help me stay happy, healthy, and calm. And besides the physical activity that I crave, it’s important to me to be able to use my brain. Please give me jobs to do and teach me what you expect from me. The sky is the limit with what I can learn!

I’m also an affectionate dog who loves attention from you. I like to get my belly rubbed and I like to curl up next to you to give you sweet kisses and cuddle. I also enjoy playing with toys and I can entertain myself with them if you’re busy with other stuff. Bottom line: I’m a fun, goofy, adventurous little dog who finds joy in everything I do!

Come to Wayside and ask to meet me!

Love, Kenny

Hi there, I’m Daisy Mae! I’m an adorable, 2-year-old sweetheart with beautiful fur and a bright smile. I came to Wayside after my last shelter ran out of space, and now it’s time for me to take the next step and find the people that I can call my family.

I am a loyal, affectionate, loving friend, once I get to know you. I’m shy and hesitant at first though and I just need a little extra time to know I can trust you. I’m looking for someone who can be patient and calm with me and gently praise me when I’m a good girl. I’m smart and I pick up on things quickly, so with a routine, I’ll feel settled in no time.

I’m a member of the Wayside Runner’s Group, so I’ll enjoy going for walks or runs with you! I prefer a quiet neighborhood or walking trails where I know what to expect, and I do pretty well on my leash. Noisy, high traffic areas make me nervous though and I’d love to have my very own fenced yard to relax and play in. I will need a home without other dogs, but I promise to show you so much love that I’ll be enough!

I also have a cool video! Check it out here.

Come to Wayside and ask to meet me!

Love, Daisy Mae

Waif Wednesday

Happy Waif Wednesday! Meet our three awesome Waifs of the Week: Athena, Herb, and Hobbs. These three lovebugs can’t wait to find their people!

Hey there, I’m Athena! I’m a 10-month-old sweetie pie, and I can’t wait to find my forever family. I may still be a puppy, but I’m very mature, promise!

My favorite activity is exploring –– outside, inside, you name it. I don’t like being bored, and I’m very curious about the big, beautiful world around me. If you’re looking for a best friend, I’m your girl. I’m also super smart. I love working for treats, I’m housebroken, I’m a great eater, and I already know “sit” and “down.” How impressive is that?

While I’m a very social pup, I get along best with adult humans and other dogs. I’ve had some experience at dog parks, and let me tell you, I’m a pro. I’m great on a leash, even though sometimes I might pull when I get excited. I just want to have fun!

I do request that you bring the whole family to meet me before you bring me home. I just want to make sure we can all be friends!

If I sound like the perfect pup for you, come to Wayside and ask to meet me!

Love, Athena

Hi there! My name is Herb, and it’s so nice to meet you!

I am a handsome 2-year-old guy with the softest, fluffiest fur you can imagine. I am proud of my fur, and I’ll sit happily on a lap while someone lovingly brushes it for me. Speaking of laps, I love them! I’m known around Wayside for being a sweet, loving lap cat. I’m a big fan of people, and I’d make a great sidekick for someone who is looking for a new best friend. I also enjoy watching birds and talking to them through the window, playing with wand toys, and eating treats. I’m a simple guy who enjoys the simple pleasures in life.

If I sound like the perfect kitty for you, come to Wayside and ask for me!

Love, Herb

Hi there, my name is Hobbs!

I came to wonderful Wayside a little while ago on a transfer when my last place needed more room. That’s OK, because I know I will find my family very soon here! The people are super kind and like to show off my MANY talents. Some of my talents include my handsome face, of course––I was born with that, though! I also know the commands “look,” “sit,” “down,” and “shake!”  They say that qualifies me as a very smart fella. I walk nicely on a leash, and I am motivated by both treats and toys, so I hope you have some of those in my new home.

I am 65 pounds of solid lovable hunk and can’t wait to meet you. I do request that you bring the whole family, including dogs, to meet me before you take me home. I just want to make sure we can all be buddies!

If I sound like the perfect pup for you, come to Wayside and ask to meet me!

Love always and tail wags for days, Hobbs

How to Pet-Proof Your Plants

With spring finally here and summer on the horizon, our indoor and outdoor gardens are growing. Protecting our plants from our pets is one thing pet parents deal with regularly, but it’s also important to protect our pets from our plants. Not all plants are made equal when it comes to how safe they are for cats and dogs, so we’ve compiled some tips on how to keep your home green and pet-safe.

As a rule of thumb, do your own research on each individual plant you’re considering for your home. Ask the folks at Lowe’s or your favorite plant nursery if they carry any pet-safe plants, and when in doubt, a quick Google search should give you some peace of mind before purchasing. Your veterinarian should also be able to give you information about how to keep your home pet-friendly.

Popular plants toxic to cats and dogs include:

  • Asparagus fern
  • Aloe
  • Daffodil
  • Azalea
  • Tulip
  • Dumb cane
  • Amaryllis
  • Chrysanthemum
  • Sago palm
  • Certain herbs, like lavender and oregano
  • Certain succulents, like jade

It may be disheartening to learn that some of your favorite plants aren’t safe for cats and dogs, but a little extra time and research is worth the health and well-being of your furbabies. We’ve found some alternatives that are just as beautiful:

  • Boston, maidenhair, staghorn, and bird’s nest ferns
  • Air plants
  • African violet
  • Hibiscus
  • Spider plant
  • Prayer plant
  • Phalaenopsis orchid
  • Lace flower vine
  • Parlor palm
  • Certain herbs, like basil, sage, and thyme
  • Certain succulents, like hens and chicks, echeveria, and rosettes

As an added bonus, many of these alternatives are relatively low-maintenance plants, some only requiring low to medium light and weekly watering.

Still, if you must plant fairy rings of daffodils, or if you can’t let go of the healing powers of raw aloe, remember to closely monitor your pets around these plants. If possible, find locations for toxic plants that are inaccessible by your pets, giving special consideration to cat abilities.

The ASPCA keeps an index of the most-commonly reported plants toxic to pets. Common signs that a cat or dog has ingested a poisonous plant include difficulty breathing, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drinking, and an irregular heart beat.

If you think your animal has ingested a poisonous plant or other toxic substance, contact your veterinarian or ASPCA’s 24-hour emergency poison hotline at (888) 426-4435.

Waif Wednesday

Happy Waif Wednesday! Meet our wonderful Waifs of the Week: Harlow, Maurie, and Huckleberry. One of our original Waifs of the Week found his forever family, so Maurie is taking his place. These three cuties can’t wait to find their people!

Hi there, I’m Harlow! I’m friendly, social, smart, and full of fun. I’m a darling, almost 3-year-old sweetheart with the most expressive face. I first came to Wayside about a year ago as a transfer from another shelter. I can’t wait to be part of a family and go on adventures together and do all the fun stuff that families do!

I’m super sweet and I love people! And guess what? I’m already housebroken and crate trained! I love to play with my toys, and I never turn down a tasty treat, which I’m happy to sit for. I love to learn, so hope you’ll teach me lots of new things! I love other dogs and I have excellent doggie social skills. I’d love another playful dog in my life, but I’ll be happy as your only dog as well, as long as you spend lots of time with me! I love going for walks and I do awesome on my leash, so I will need daily exercise in my new home.

If I sound like the perfect pup for you, come to Wayside and ask to meet me!

Love, Harlow

Hi there, I’m Maurie! As you can see from my photos and video, I’m a handsome, grey and white tabby with bright green eyes. I’m a big guy, but I’m working on slimming down with diet and lots of exercise.

I was surrendered to Wayside when my owner could no longer take care of me. I was so scared and confused with the big move, but luckily I’ve been able to live in a foster home while I wait for my new home. My foster mom says I’m social, playful, and when I’m in the mood for pets, I LOVE them! When I’m not in the mood for pets I like to look out the window and watch for birds. I like to lay in bed while my foster mom reads or works on the computer, so if you’re looking for a sidekick, I’m your guy!

I’m looking for a quiet home where I can relax and play and be loved forever. If that sounds good to you, come to Wayside and ask to meet me!

I also have a cool video!

Love, Maurie

Hi there, I’m Huckleberry! I’m a 1-year-old people-lover, and I cannot wait until the day that I have my very own family to love. I came to Wayside via the ASPCA after they rescued me. It feels so good to be safe, cared for, and loved!

Besides my stunning good looks, I’m friendly, social, athletic, and easy-going. I’d love to exercise, play, and act goofy with you, then curl up right next to you as we unwind for the day. I love treats, and I’m happy to sit for them.  I’m a typical lab––eager to please and motivated by treats––so I hope you will continue training me. I’m curious yet a little wary of toys. I walk great on a leash, and I’d love a daily walk with you through our neighborhood! I’m still learning about doggie social skills, so if you do have another dog, I’ll need to meet them before we go home together, just to make sure we’re a good match for each other.

It’s hard for a social dog like me to be homeless. I need a family of my very own to take care of. I want to make you smile every single day! I’ll be patiently waiting for you, so come to Wayside and ask to meet me!

Love, Huckleberry
