Waif Wednesday

Wednesday is the favorite day of the week for these Waifs! Our Waifs of the Week are Rusty Rose, Brian and Tinman! They are all ready to make their families the happiest people on Earth, and we are ready to see how happy you make them in return!

Hi there!  My name’s Rusty.  I’m a fun and happy gal who’s always ready to play!  Wouldn’t you love to be my new playmate?

I’m a friendly girl, and I will seek out your affection and attention.  Like I said, I love to play – especially with toys! I seem to like other dogs too, but I definitely would want to meet any other canine kids before going home with them.  Sometimes I just get so excited, it’s hard to contain myself!  I’m really hoping to find a family that will take the time to train and teach me all there is to know.  I am so eager to learn, and I promise to be a good girl once I know what’s expected of me.

Did you know I’m really good on a leash? I’m a great runner and would love to help you get in shape.  What do you say?  Please come on down to Wayside to meet me, so we can start our new adventures together!

Wiggles and wags, Rusty

Hello there! I’m an adorable little kitten! I am a bundle of fun in a small package and I am so ready for a new family to call my own. Kittens are so much fun and boy do we love to play! I will need some work on training but we will have a lot of fun along the way. Being such a youngster I will definitely need both physical and mental stimulation to help me stay well rounded. Give me some fun and interactive toys in the mix and we will have the time of our lives! I think I should also tell you that I love to cuddle. Curl up with me and I will purr to show you just how happy I am; cuddles are my favorite! If you are looking for a new buddy to bring you smiles and cheer, come on out to Wayside Waifs and ask to meet me!

Hi, wonderful people, my name is Tinman!

I was recently transferred to Wayside after my last place ran out of room and also discovered I have those things called heartworms.  The nice people here said they would help me get rid of those so I can live happily ever after!

I am 43 pounds of bouncy, handsome hound/retriever.  I am super wiggly and friendly.  I am just 1 year old and I have not been taught any commands yet, but I am so ready to learn some.  I walk great on a leash and don’t pull much at all.  I enjoy nice strolls around while sniffing the grass and looking for squirrels.

If my stunning good looks and charming personality traits caught your eye, please come meet me.  Bring the whole family, dogs too, so we can make sure we all vibe well.

Hope to see you real soon.

Love and tail wags, Tinman

Waif Wednesday

Introducing to you our pawsome Waifs of the Week: Layla, Baby and Rambo! These three are patiently waiting to cross paths with the family of their dreams here at Wayside!

Hello there!  My name is Layla.  I am looking for a new home and a new family to love! I came to Wayside as a stray.  I don’t understand why my family never came to get me, but I am ready to shake it off and find my people to lavish with my love!  I am told I am velvety soft, and the folks here think I just might be housebroken.  I love to play with toys – I can play fetch for hours, and I love to play with squeaky toys.  I toss them up and catch them!  I get along with other dogs and enjoy play groups here at the shelter.  I also know how to sit, lay down, and target on command.  I am a smart girl, if I do say so myself!  I am nervous with new people, but once I get to know you I will be a most loving and loyal companion.

If I sound like the dog for you, please come to Wayside Waifs and ask to meet Layla!

Hello there, my name is Rambo!

I sure am glad you are checking out my profile pic!  I just recently came to Wayside with a couple of my friends (Lovey and Ladybug), so we are all playing together in Rover’s Romp & Run currently.  You can’t miss us…we are in the middle of the adoption floor, wagging our tails and lounging in our baby pools.

I am a bigger fella at 70 pounds, but I wouldn’t mind laying next to you on the couch and watching some TV.  I would really LOVE to go for long walks and maybe even some runs with you.  I went on a waif run here and was told I did GREAT!  I already know the command SIT but would love to learn more things with you.  I get a little excited on leash, but a harness can help me with that.  I also seem house (well kennel) trained here as well.

If I sound like the one for you, please come meet me soon and bring the whole family (dogs too).

Can’t wait to meet you, I will be here with tail wagging!

Love, Rambo

National Bullying Prevention Month

October has finally arrived, and it is a great time to honor and teach about a very important issue that affects the lives of many every day. Something that everyone should know, if they don’t already, is that October is National Bullying Prevention Month!

Many animals come to Wayside Waifs who are in desperate need of our care, and we do all that we can to help give those animals a chance at a better life. Some of these animals have unfortunately not seen the brightest days, and that is the case for many children experiencing bullying as well.

Bullying is universal, and our animal shelter strongly advocates for both our two-legged and four-legged friends who have been bullied. We want to help teach our community about the violence that goes on in all aspects of life, whether that is with animals, at home, in school or out in the real world.

“People, abused by people, often abuse animals. People who abuse animals often also abuse people. And so the cycle goes,” (No More Bullying!, waysidewaifs.org). So what better way to teach the younger generations about bullying than through a fun, interactive and new perspective.

Our Humane Education department has a program called No More Bullying! where they visit elementary schools, both local and national, to teach third, fourth and fifth graders about bullying and violence prevention. It is an integration of both human and animal perspectives and emphasizes how important it is to treat all aspects of life with love and respect. Through this program, Wayside Waifs hopes to teach others how to create a respectful and safe environment and inspire change.

Our Humane Educators are in schools for a total of five days, teaching 60 minute lessons at a time. During each lesson, students learn about five core values: responsibility, compassion, being humane, self-control and integrity. They receive journals that encourage them to think deeply about these values and how they can improve on them throughout their daily routines. Students also learn about how these values correlate with properly caring for animals.

One of the students’ favorite parts about No More Bullying! is the company of companion animals. There are about 10 animals used on daily basis that go to schools with our educators and help assist with the curriculum. With an animal present in the classroom while the No More Bullying! materials are being taught, students are more engaged because it presents the idea of “no more bullying,” something they have heard a thousand times, from a different and exciting perspective.

Our companion animals and Humane Educators bring enthusiasm to the classroom, and students absolutely love when they get to visit with animals. It is a great way for kids to learn about bullying prevention, and have fun while doing it!
