Give the gift of pet adoption (but not the actual pet!)

Is your child asking Santa for a new puppy or kitten for Christmas? Is there someone in your life who would love an animal companion for the new year? Do you want to surprise someone special in your life with a furry bundle of joy?

The impulse to give someone the happiness that comes with a new pet is wonderful – for the person, and for the pet. However, be sure to give such a gift in a responsible way.

That means giving the promise of a pet – not putting a puppy in a box! As cute as a puppy under the Christmas tree may be in movies and TV commercials, pet ownership is a big decision and a long-term commitment.

Instead, we encourage you to give a Wayside Waifs pet adoption gift certificate. Just drop by our office or call 816-986-4426. No time left to get a certificate? Just wrap up a few pet supplies and toys, with the promise of visiting Wayside to select just the right animal.

If you give someone the promise of a pet on Christmas day, you can go online and look at the Waifs available for adoption and visit us the very next day to meet your favorites in person and make the perfect match.

We’ll be open to the public on Friday, December 26, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. To learn more about the adoption process, visit the adoptions section of our website.

Also, if the next few weeks are going to be hectic, we suggest waiting until after the holidays when things settle down to a normal routine. That way, the new pet will be able to adjust to its new home with minimal stress and distractions.

A pet can be a wonderful gift – and with a gift certificate from Wayside Waifs, you can make sure that gift is absolutely perfect!

Share your holiday spirit with the animals at Wayside Waifs!

Our animal “guests” receive the best care year-round from our caring, compassionate staff and volunteers. But during the holidays we work even harder to make things special for the animals in our care.

Sadly, many deserving pets will spend this holiday season at Wayside Waifs. You can help make the holiday special for these animals with a donation to our Holiday Fund Drive.

Your gift will help stray puppies like Bosco
This year we hope for happy endings and new beginnings for our precious animals like Bosco, an adorable terrier mix puppy who was found wandering the streets – alone, scared and hungry.

A kind lady approached him and offered him food and affection. She put Bosco in her car and drove him to the loving staff at Wayside Waifs. Now Bosco has a warm home for the holidays.

Your gift will help homeless cats like Bella

This holiday season, we’re also caring for Bella, a pretty little Tabby who had her life turned upside down. One minute, she was comfortably sleeping on the back of her easy chair, and the next minute she was in a carrier on her way to Wayside Waifs.

Bella’s owner lost her home and was forced to part with her beloved best friend. Knowing that Wayside Waifs would provide a safe place for Bella helped ease the pain of parting with her. Bella now waits for a new family in our facility…perhaps a bit confused, but warm and safe.

Giving is easy…and every dollar makes a difference!
Bosco and Bella are just two of hundreds of animals in our care this holiday season. A gift to our Holiday Fund Drive will truly make a difference in the lives of so many animals.

Please take a moment to remember the animals in our care. They are counting on us – and on wonderful animal lovers like you.

A gift of $500 can help us feed animals for a week. A gift of $100 covers the cost of spaying and neutering a litter of kittens. $50 can buy formula for puppies. Even a gift of $10 can truly make a difference in the life of a deserving animal like Bosco or Bella.

Click here to donate online – giving online is quick and easy, and it will help your dollars go to work faster.

Or, if you prefer, you can mail a check to:

Happy Holidays to you and yours from the staff, board of directors, volunteers…and all of the animals at Wayside Waifs!

Are you making a list and checking it twice?

If so, we hope you’ll include an item or two from our Wish List on your giving list this holiday season. While others may be dreaming of sugar plum fairies, we have visions of puppy pads dancing in our heads!

Our Wish List includes all sorts of things we use at the shelter to help care for thousands of animals each year. Here are just a few of the items Wayside Waifs is wishing for this holiday season:

  • Dog and cat treats
  • Cat and kitten toys
  • Kong toys
  • Puppy pads
  • Small mammal supplies
  • Paper grocery sacks
  • Ball and rope toys

For a complete list of items you can donate, visit our online Wish List at www.waysidewaifs.org/wish.

(Please note that we do NOT need dog or cat food donations at this time).

Wishes for every budget, large and small
Please have a look at our Wish List and keep us in mind on your next visit to the pet store or the office supply store. (There’s a PDF version of the Wish List you can download and print to take with you when you’re shopping).

If you can spend just an extra $10 or $20 on supplies when you’re shopping for yourself and your pets, that’s $10 or $20 that Wayside Waifs doesn’t have to spend. You might even find that you can buy some supplies in bulk at a much better price – including office supplies like paper and batteries. Then keep what you need and donate the rest to Wayside Waifs.

In fact, you don’t have to spend any money to make a difference. Your family can save and donate paper grocery bags (kitties love to hide in them!) and newspapers. You can also donate cardboard soda flats (we use them for kitty litter). We also need gently used kennels and crates.

On the other hand, if you’re feeling extra generous this holiday season, we have a few very special items on our list. If we were sitting on Santa’s knee, we’d ask him for a laptop computer, an LCD projector, a portable projector screen, a chest freezer, and (because we’ve been very, very good!) a van or truck.

If you would like to make one of these wishes come true (or make a monetary donation dedicated to the purchase of one of these items), contact Marla Svoboda at 816-986-4401 to discuss the details.

It’s always a season for giving!
Of course, our Wish List isn’t just for the holidays. We need a wide variety of supplies every day of the year.

So when you’re stocking up at Costco or Sam’s Club and see a great deal on paper towels, or 55-gallon trash bags, or puppy pads – or dozens of other daily supplies on our Wish List! – think about how these unglamorous but very necessary supplies will help provide care and comfort to the animals.

On the Wish List web page, you can also sign up to be part of our Critical Needs Network and receive emails when we experience a critical shortage of supplies. This is a special way to be part of our “supply safety net”.

Just visit the Wish List page at www.waysidewaifs.org/wish and click on the link to the right-hand side to sign up for this important network.

However and whenever you make donations to Wayside Waifs, THANK YOU for your support. Every wish list item that comes through our doors helps us care for the animals in our shelter.

Welcome to Our Blog!

It’s all about the animals.

Wayside Waifs is committed to building a community-wide network of resources to support all animal lovers, and this blog is designed to strengthen that network.

In this blog, we’ll be sharing important tips on caring for your animal companions. We’ll also share all sorts of information about how you can get involved and support Wayside Waifs. We’ll also feature Waifs that are available for adoption – and share some great success stories of animals who have found loving homes.

Wayside Waifs has been helping homeless animals find permanent homes since 1944. We’re Kansas City’s oldest and largest humane society – last year alone, we found homes for more than 4,600 animals.

In addition to running the area’s largest shelter, we also offer a wide range of programs that help meet the needs of the region’s pets and their human companions.

Our staff and volunteers have a wealth of information and experience, and we think this blog is a great opportunity to tap into our collective knowledge and share it with the entire Kansas City community.

We hope you’ll visit often. And please spread the word about our new blog to fellow animal lovers, including friends and family who have pets – or who are thinking about adopting a new animal companion!

Most of all, we invite you to share your thoughts and questions. Part of the beauty of a blog is it allows people to post comments and be part of the conversation.

We look forward to hearing from you!
